Zalgo Text Generator
Turn any text into zalgo, the creepy stacked-mark effect. Type below and pick an intensity, from a light flicker to full extreme, then tap to copy.
What the badges under each style mean
Each badge grades the rarest characters a style uses, so a style is only rated as safe as its riskiest character. Nothing here is rated as working unless there is a reason behind it.
- ✓ works observed rendering in that field.
- ! disputed sources contradict each other and none of them is primary.
- ? untested no public evidence either way. This does not mean it fails.
- ✗ blocked the platform was seen returning a real error for it.
- Instagram For your bio, display name and captions. Your @username takes only lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so no style on this site works there.
- Discord For messages, server nicknames and your About Me. Your @username is lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores only, so no style on this site works there.
- Roblox For your display name only. A Roblox username is letters, numbers and one underscore, so no style on this site works there. Grades come from the evidence table further down this site's Roblox page.

What is zalgo text?
Zalgo text is normal text with a pile of tiny marks stacked on top of, through and underneath every letter, so the words look like they are melting, bleeding or crawling out of the line. The effect comes from an old internet meme about a creepy character called Zalgo, and it has been a staple of horror jokes, glitch aesthetics and gaming names ever since.
It is not an image and not a font. Each mark is a real Unicode character called a combining mark, designed to attach to the letter before it. A zalgo text generator simply adds a different set of them after every letter. That is why the result can be selected, searched and pasted like any other text, and why it works in so many places without anything to install.
How to make zalgo text
- Type or paste your words into the box at the top of the page.
- Every zalgo style updates at once, from a light flicker to the heaviest pile-up.
- Tap the style you like to copy it.
- Paste it into your bio, caption, message or chat.
Short text works best. Zalgo on a single word or a short phrase looks deliberate. Zalgo on a whole paragraph is a wall of marks that nobody can read.
The zalgo styles on this page
The difference between the styles is where the marks go and how many there are. Pick by how much chaos the place you are pasting into can take.
- Zalgo Light: one mark above and one below each letter. Readable, and the least likely to be clipped.
- Zalgo: the classic balance of marks above, through and below.
- Zalgo Rising and Zalgo Falling: all the marks on one side only, so the text looks like it is climbing or dripping.
- Zalgo Through: marks that cross the middle of the letters, closer to a scribbled-out look.
- Zalgo Bold and Zalgo Script: the same effect over a bold or cursive alphabet, for a heavier or more eerie shape.
- Zalgo Extreme and Zalgo Mega: so many marks that they overlap the lines above and below. Striking, and the first to break in an app that clips text.
Where zalgo text works, and where it does not
Messages, captions, comments and bios take zalgo text in most apps, because combining marks are standard Unicode. Two things decide how it looks, and neither is under this tool's control: the font the app draws with, and whether the text box clips overflow.
- Clipping. Many apps cut the text off at the line height, so tall marks above or below the line can be sliced off. Heavier styles lose more.
- Name and username fields. Some fields remove combining marks or reject them, and usernames and handles are the most likely to. Test a short sample before you rely on one.
- Length limits. Every mark counts as a character, so a ten letter word in Zalgo Mega can use well over a hundred. If a field has a character limit, a lighter style fits much more.
- Screen readers. Heavy zalgo is hard to read aloud. Keep names, links and anything important in plain text.
Zalgo, cursed and glitch text: which page do you want?
These three overlap, so here is the short version. This page is for the raw stacked-mark effect at a level you choose. If you want the same effect dressed for horror, with eyes, skulls, candles and gothic lettering, use the cursed text generator. If you want a digital, broken-screen look that stays readable, with strikes, slashes and static blocks, use the glitch text generator. For darker lettering without the mark pile-up, the gothic font generator is the right place.
Tips for good zalgo text
- Keep it short. One word or a short line. The effect is a punchline, not a paragraph.
- Leave room. Put the text on its own line with a blank line above and below, so the marks have space to spread.
- Start light. If the first style is already unreadable, step back one before you paste.
- Preview before you save. Paste it into the real field and check how it renders. Phones and desktops draw the same marks differently.
- Mix it with normal text. A zalgo word inside a plain sentence draws the eye. For more ways to style text, try the fancy text generator.

Seeing the styles side by side makes it easier to choose. Here is the word “Hello” in each zalgo style from this zalgo text generator, from the lightest to the heaviest. Type your own words in the box at the top of the page and every line rewrites itself.
- Zalgo LightH͍͆ė̱l̎ͅl̎ͅo͉̓

Notice how Zalgo Light stays easy to read while Zalgo Extreme starts to swallow the letters. That trade-off between how scary it looks and how much of the word survives is the main thing to judge when you pick a zalgo font style for a bio, a username or a post.
How zalgo text works: combining diacritical marks
Unicode has a family of characters that are not meant to stand alone. They are called combining diacritical marks, and they exist so that a writer can add an accent, a tilde, a dot or a line to the letter in front of them. The accent on the e in café can be a single precomposed character, or it can be a plain e followed by a combining acute accent. Both look the same.
Zalgo text exploits one detail of that system: nothing stops you from stacking many combining marks after the same letter. A zalgo generator picks marks from three groups, the ones that sit above the letter, the ones that run through the middle, and the ones that hang below, and appends several of each to every character. The font then tries to draw all of them on one letter, which is where the tall, spilling, glitchy look comes from.
Two practical consequences follow. First, zalgo text is made of real characters, so it can be copied, pasted, selected and searched. Second, the marks are real characters too, and each one counts toward any character limit. A short word in a heavy style can use far more room than it appears to, which matters for bios, display names and anything with a cap.
Zalgo text for Discord, Instagram, TikTok and gaming
Most people search for a zalgo text generator because they want to paste the result somewhere specific. Here is how the usual places tend to behave.
- Discord. Zalgo text is a long-standing favourite in Discord messages, nicknames and server names, and it generally displays. Discord clips the overflow, so very heavy styles can look cut off, and servers can have rules or bots that remove zalgo, so check the server rules before posting a wall of it.
- Instagram and TikTok. Bios, captions and comments take zalgo text, but the line height is tight, so tall marks can be sliced off or can crowd the line above. Light and plain Zalgo hold up best. Keep your @handle in plain text.
- Games. In-game names and chat vary a lot. Many games only allow a limited character set for names and will reject or silently strip combining marks, while chat boxes are often more forgiving. Test a short sample rather than assuming it will work.
- X (Twitter), Reddit and forums. Posts generally accept it. Some communities moderate it because heavy zalgo overlaps neighbouring lines and makes threads hard to read.
- Documents and messages. In a word processor or a messaging app the marks usually render cleanly, because those apps give lines more vertical room.
What people use scary and creepy text for
Zalgo is a tool for tone, and a few uses come up again and again:
- Horror and creepypasta posts. A single corrupted word inside an otherwise normal story is a classic way to signal that something has gone wrong.
- Halloween captions and bios. Heavier styles for one night of spooky fun, then back to normal.
- Gamer tags and channel names. A light style on a clan tag or channel title gives it an edgy, glitching look.
- Memes and jokes. The original zalgo meme was about creeping dread, and the text style is still shorthand for “this is cursed.”
- Alternate reality games and puzzle content. Corrupted text is a common way to hint at hidden or broken information.
- Glitch aesthetics. Stacked marks are one way to get a corrupted-signal look in plain text, alongside the lighter options on the glitch text generator.
How to remove or fix zalgo text
Sometimes you end up with zalgo text you did not want, such as a pasted message that overlaps everything around it. Because the letters underneath are normal, the fix is to remove the combining marks, not the letters.
- Retype it. For a short phrase, the quickest fix is to type the words again in plain text.
- Use a plain text field. Pasting into a basic text editor does not remove marks by itself, but it lets you see exactly what you have and edit around it.
- Strip the marks with code.If you work with text in code, normalising it and removing characters in the Unicode “Mark” category leaves the base letters behind.
- If it is a name on your own profile, edit the field and replace it. Heavy zalgo in a display name can also get an account flagged or hidden in some places, so it is worth keeping plain.
Accessibility, moderation and good manners
Zalgo text is fun, and it is also one of the hardest styles for other people to read. Screen readers can stumble over long strings of marks, and a heavy style can push other content out of view, or run over text in the lines above and below it. Some communities treat it as disruptive for exactly that reason.
A few habits keep it enjoyable for everyone. Use it for effect on a word or a short line. Put names, links, dates and anything that has to be understood in plain text. Pick a lighter style for places where people have to read your text quickly. And when a server, forum or platform has a rule against it, follow the rule.
More text effects and related generators
If zalgo is not quite the look you are after, ReadyFonts has a family of related tools. For horror styling with eyes, skulls and candles, try the cursed text generator. For readable, broken-screen effects, use the glitch text generator. For dark lettering without any stacked marks, the gothic font generator gives you blackletter and Old English. For rounded, friendly lettering there is the bubble text generator, and the Discord font generator collects styles that suit servers and nicknames.
Is this zalgo text generator free?
Yes. It is free, with no account, no limit and nothing to install. Everything runs in your browser, so the text you type is not sent to a server. Type, tap a style and paste.
Frequently asked questions
What is zalgo text?
Zalgo text is ordinary text with piles of Unicode combining marks stacked above, through and below each letter, so the characters look like they are bleeding, melting or glitching out of the line. It comes from an old internet meme about a creepy character called Zalgo. The letters underneath are still normal letters, which is why zalgo text can still be selected, searched and pasted like any other text.
How do I make zalgo text?
Type your words into the box above and every zalgo style rewrites them at once, from Zalgo Light up to Zalgo Mega. Tap a style to copy it, then paste it wherever you want. There is nothing to install and no sign up.
Which zalgo style should I pick?
Start with Zalgo Light or plain Zalgo, which stay readable and are the least likely to get cut off. Rising and Falling put every mark on one side only, and Through draws the marks across the middle of the letters. Extreme and Mega pile on so many marks that they overlap the lines above and below, which is the point, but it is also where apps start to clip or break the effect.
Does zalgo text work on Discord, Instagram and TikTok?
In messages and bios it generally pastes and displays, because combining marks are standard Unicode. How it looks depends on the app: many clip the marks at the edge of the text box, so heavy zalgo can be cut off or can spill into the text around it. Some name and username fields strip combining marks or reject them outright, so test a short sample before you rely on one.
Why does my zalgo text look different in different apps?
The marks are positioned by the font and the app drawing the text, not by this tool. Each app handles stacked marks differently, so the same string can look dramatic in one place and tame in another. Heavier styles vary the most.
Is zalgo text safe to use?
The text itself is harmless, but very heavy zalgo can be hard to read, can make a page or message taller than expected, and is awkward for people using screen readers. Use it for effect in short bursts, and keep important information such as a name or a link in plain text.
Is this zalgo text generator free?
Yes, completely free with no account and no limit. It runs in your browser, so the text you type is never sent anywhere.
