Glitch Text Generator
Make your text look like a broken screen. Type below and copy a glitch style, from subtle scanlines to full static.
What the badges under each style mean
Each badge grades the rarest characters a style uses, so a style is only rated as safe as its riskiest character. Nothing here is rated as working unless there is a reason behind it.
- ✓ works observed rendering in that field.
- ! disputed sources contradict each other and none of them is primary.
- ? untested no public evidence either way. This does not mean it fails.
- ✗ blocked the platform was seen returning a real error for it.
- Instagram For your bio, display name and captions. Your @username takes only lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so no style on this site works there.
- Discord For messages, server nicknames and your About Me. Your @username is lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores only, so no style on this site works there.
- Roblox For your display name only. A Roblox username is letters, numbers and one underscore, so no style on this site works there. Grades come from the evidence table further down this site's Roblox page.

What is glitch text?
Glitch text is text made to look like a corrupted screen, a bad signal or a scrambled data feed. Where zalgo text buries each letter under a pile of marks, glitch text uses lighter, more controlled tricks: strike and slash marks drawn through the letters, underlines at odd angles, and bands of static blocks. The words stay legible, they just look like something has gone wrong with them.
It is built entirely from Unicode characters, so it is real text you can copy, paste, select and search. Nothing is an image, and nothing needs a special font installed.
How to make glitch text
- Type or paste your text into the box at the top.
- Every glitch style rewrites it live.
- Tap the style you want to copy it.
- Paste it into your bio, a post, a message or a chat.
Like most effects, it works best on a short line such as a name, a title or a single word.
The glitch styles, by effect
The styles fall into two groups, and the difference matters for where you can paste them.
Mark-based glitch
These add combining marks to the letters themselves.
- Glitch and Glitch Mix: a different mark on each letter, strikes and slashes and underlines in rotation, so the line looks like a signal breaking up.
- Scanline Glitch: a slash and an underline together on every letter, like the lines across an old monitor.
- Slashed, Strikethrough, Dotted and Wavy: the single-mark styles. The cleanest and most readable of the group.
- Bold Glitch: a light mark effect over a bold sans alphabet, for a heavier look.
Block-character glitch
These do not use combining marks. They break the line up with block characters instead.
- Static Glitch: a cycle of light, medium and dark shaded blocks between the letters, like TV static.
- Glitch Barcode and Block frames: a band of bars or blocks on either side of the text.
- Pixel Glitch: squared capital letters framed by half-block pixels, a retro game feel.
The block styles are the safe choice when mark-based effects get stripped, because they are ordinary visible characters rather than marks that depend on the app drawing them.
Glitch text, zalgo text and cursed text
If you want maximum chaos, the zalgo text generator piles on marks until the letters nearly disappear. If you want the horror version with skulls, candles and eyes, try the cursed text generator. Glitch text is the one to reach for when the words still need to be read, such as a gamer tag, a channel name or a title.
Where glitch text works
- Bios, captions and posts: generally fine, since everything here is standard Unicode.
- Chat apps and servers: usually fine in messages. Discord is a common home for it. Some display name fields filter combining marks, so check a short sample.
- Usernames and handles: usually plain letters only. Keep the handle plain and use glitch text in the display name or bio instead.
- Looks vary: the font each app uses decides how marks are drawn, so the same text can look sharper on a phone than on a desktop, or the other way round.
- Accessibility: screen readers can struggle with marks and blocks. Keep anything important in plain text.
Tips for good glitch text
- Short beats long. A name or a title reads as intentional. A paragraph is exhausting.
- Pick by where you are pasting. Use the block styles if the place strips marks, and the mark styles when it does not.
- Do not stack effects. One glitch style is enough. Layering several together makes the text unreadable.
- Try a related look. Bold, boxed and decorated variants live in the fancy text generator and the Discord font generator.
Glitch text copy and paste examples
Here is the word “Glitch” in several styles from this glitch text generator. Type your own words at the top of the page and every style rewrites itself.

The first few use combining marks on the letters. Static Glitch, Pixel Glitch and Glitch Barcode use block characters instead, which is why they survive in places that strip marks.
How glitch text works
A glitch font is not a font. Each effect is built from characters already in Unicode. The mark-based styles attach combining characters such as strikethrough, slash, underline and tilde overlays to the letters, and Glitch Mix rotates through several of them so each letter gets a different mark. The block-based styles use the shaded and half-block characters from the Block Elements range, the same characters old terminal programs used to draw boxes and gradients.
Since the result is plain text, it can be copied into any app that accepts text. And because the letters underneath are the real alphabet, glitchy text is more readable than most corrupted-text effects, which is exactly why people prefer it for names and titles.
Where the glitch look comes from
The aesthetic belongs to a wider tradition of digital breakage. Glitch art, VHS and CRT distortion, corrupted images, datamoshed video and error screens all celebrate what happens when technology fails in an interesting way. It shows up in cyberpunk visuals, vaporwave and retro-futurism, in horror games that pretend to crash, and in the branding of streamers and music acts who want a broken-signal feel. Glitch text is the typographic version: the same idea, in a line you can paste into a bio.
What people use glitchy text for
- Gamer tags and clan names. A glitch style gives a name a corrupted, digital edge.
- Streamer and channel branding. Panel titles, stream headings and Discord channel names with a broken-screen look.
- Bios and captions. A glitch line on a bio or a caption for a cyberpunk, hacker or digital aesthetic.
- Music and art pages. Track titles, release notes and artist names for electronic or experimental projects.
- Horror and mystery content. A line that looks like the screen is failing is an old trick for tension.
- Jokes and error messages.Fake crash text, a “404” line or a corrupted greeting.
Glitch text on Discord, TikTok, Instagram and X
- Discord. Messages, nicknames and channel topics take it in most cases. Block styles are the safest in channel names, which can be picky about what they accept.
- TikTok and Instagram. Bios, names and captions work. Mark-based styles can lose their effect if the field strips combining marks, so a block style is the reliable fallback.
- X (Twitter). Posts accept it. Combining marks add to the character count, so a heavy style uses up more of the limit than it looks.
- Twitch and YouTube. Titles and descriptions generally take it. Check how it looks in the preview before you publish.
- Usernames. Plain letters only, nearly everywhere. Keep the handle plain and put the glitch look in the display name.
Pairing glitch text with other styles
Glitch text looks best with company. A broken-signal line pairs well with a clean wide alphabet: the fullwidth style on the aesthetic fonts page gives the spaced-out vaporwave look, and the monospace and bold sans alphabets in the fancy text generator give a terminal feel. For a heavier horror reading of the same idea, use the cursed text generator, and for maximum chaos the zalgo text generator.
Readability, limits and accessibility
Glitch text is a visual effect, so it carries some limits. Marks count toward character limits, so a style with two marks per letter uses roughly three times the characters of the plain word. Some fields strip combining marks, which removes the effect and leaves plain letters. Screen readers can read marks and blocks oddly, so anything essential belongs in plain text. And a glitch line is strongest when it is short: a name, a title or a single word.
Tips for glitch text that looks intentional
- Pick one effect. A single glitch style looks designed. Stacking several turns into noise.
- Match the mood. Scanline and Slashed suit a hacker or terminal look. Static and Pixel suit retro games. Bold Glitch is the heaviest.
- Use block styles in strict fields. Channel names, titles and any place that filters marks.
- Preview in place. Different phones and apps draw marks slightly differently.
- Keep a plain version nearby. People still need to find and tag you.
Choosing the right glitch style
There are over a dozen glitch styles on this page, and they are not interchangeable. A quick guide to picking one:
- Glitch is the base look, a pair of overlay marks on every letter. A good default when you are not sure.
- Glitch Mix uses a different mark on each letter, so the line looks randomly corrupted. The most convincing broken-signal effect.
- Scanline Glitch combines a slash and an underline, like the scan lines across an old screen. Suits retro and hacker themes.
- Slashed, Strikethrough, Dotted and Wavy are the single-mark versions. Cleaner and easier to read, good for names.
- Bold Glitch puts a light mark effect on a heavy sans alphabet, for headings that need weight.
- Static Glitch scatters shaded blocks between the letters like TV static, and works where marks are stripped.
- Pixel Glitch frames squared capitals in half-block pixels for a retro game look.
- Glitch Barcode and the block frames wrap the line in bars and blocks, like a scan or a data readout.
Glitch text for gaming profiles and nicknames
Gaming is where glitchy text gets used the most, because a corrupted, digital look fits a gamer tag. The catch is that every game and platform filters names differently. Many only allow letters, numbers and a few symbols for the account name, and some allow a wider range for a display name or a clan tag. Combining marks are the character type most likely to be rejected or stripped, while block characters and ordinary symbols are more often allowed.
So the safe approach is to test a short sample in the real field first. If the marks are removed, try a block style, which relies on visible characters instead. And keep a plain version of your name handy for the places that do not allow decoration, so friends can still search for and add you. For dedicated gaming name pages with compatibility information, see the username generator.
Glitch text and character counts
Every combining mark counts as a character, which surprises people the first time they hit a limit. A word of six letters becomes twelve characters with one mark per letter, eighteen with two. In a field with a cap, such as a bio, a display name or a post, a glitch style can use much more of the budget than the word looks like it should. The block styles add separators or frames instead, which usually costs less. If you are near a limit, shorten the text or switch to a single-mark style such as Slashed or Dotted.
Troubleshooting glitch text
- The marks disappeared after pasting. The field strips combining marks. Use a block style such as Static Glitch or Pixel Glitch.
- Letters show as empty boxes. The squared letters in Pixel Glitch are newer characters, and an older device may not draw them. Use a mark-based style instead.
- The effect looks different on my phone. Each device and app draws marks with its own font. Preview in the place you will use it.
- The text overlaps the line above. Marks extend above and below the line. Add a blank line, or pick a lighter style.
- It looks fine here but wrong in a game. Games ship their own limited fonts. If a character is missing, the game may draw a box, so choose simpler styles for in-game text.

Frequently asked questions
What is glitch text?
Glitch text imitates a corrupted screen or a bad signal. Instead of piling marks on the letters the way zalgo does, most glitch styles mix strikes, slashes and underlines, or break the line up with static blocks, so the text looks scrambled while staying legible. It is built from Unicode characters, not an image.
How do I make glitch text?
Type your text into the box above. Every glitch style updates live. Tap one to copy it, then paste it into your bio, a Discord message, a caption or a chat. Nothing to install and no account.
Is glitch text the same as zalgo text?
No, though they overlap. Zalgo stacks many combining marks above and below each letter, and it gets unreadable quickly. Glitch text uses lighter, more controlled effects such as strikethrough, slashes and block characters, so it stays readable. Use the glitch styles when you want a digital, broken look and zalgo when you want chaos.
Where does glitch text work?
It pastes anywhere that takes normal text, including Instagram bios, TikTok, Discord, X and game chats. The block and combining characters are standard Unicode. Some fields strip combining marks, so test a short sample, and remember that the exact look depends on the font each app uses.
Why is my glitch text not showing the effect?
Some apps and fonts do not draw combining marks the way others do, and a few name fields remove them. If the effect disappears, try the block-character styles (Static Glitch, Glitch Barcode or Pixel Glitch), which do not rely on combining marks at all.
Is glitch text accessible?
Not very. Screen readers can stumble over combining marks and block characters, so it is best kept for decoration. Put anything that needs to be understood, like a name, a date or a link, in plain text.
Is this glitch text generator free?
Yes, it is free, unlimited and runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
